Me in My Fig Leaf

Aha. Got your attention in a devious way.

We planted a little stick of a thing at La Jacaranda and it has flourished into a lush fig tree. This year, after practicing for a few seasons, the tree is laden with fruit. The figs ripen into a deep wine color and taste delicious. I love birds, but right now I wish my blankety-blank little feathered friends would stop beating us to the ripe figs.

Fruit trees are a mixed blessing. They toss fruit all over the ground, many half eaten by birds. And then there are the billions of little insects that love the fruit. Swarms of little insects.

No swarms, only pleasure so far.

I LOVE figs, especially the black ones, and I've only found them for sale once since I've been in Mexico, at the mercado in La Paz. Wonder if my climate (desert, coastal Sonora) would be enough like yours to give a fig tree a chance. Try hanging old CD's from the branches to scare off the birds. Boaters here do it and the big bad pelicans keep their distance.

Figs are abundant in the Mediterranean, but I don't aridity the trees tolerate aridity. The figs of Montenegro rule! We have picked them by the side of the road.
